He was a veteran (war unspecified; WWI likely given his age). He married Alma Caroline Schmidt, known as "Jean," in 1923. They had at least five children: Florine Ida (1924), Walter Henry Jr. (1927, died 1936 at age 9), Walter J. Eggers III (1930), Marie Caroline (1932), and Jim. Walter Sr. died on 12 September 1955 in St. Louis County, Missouri, and is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County alongside his parents.

Eggers, age 24, as son in the household of Henry D Eggers (age 58, head) and Henrette Eggers (age 54, born Germany). This is a federal census record, a primary source, and definitively establishes that Walter Sr. was the son of Henry D(avid Christian) Eggers and Henrietta Rose. Walter's father's birthplace is listed as Missouri (consistent with Henry Dan born Hillsboro, Jefferson Co, MO) and mother's birthplace as Germany (consistent with Henrietta born Germany). The WWII draft registration card (27 Apr 1942) was filed in Hillsboro, Jefferson Co, the same town where Henry Dan was born, indicating Walter maintained ties to his family's home area. Jeff's reported errors (Open Question #24) cannot be about the Henry Dan → Walter Sr. link, which is now proven by census.
