Will

Charles Holt's will was dated 9 October 1767 and proved 27 April 1773 in Surry County, Virginia. It names sons William, Henry, Charles, and Sam; daughter Lucy Wall; and wife Elizabeth (daughter of Robert Presson). The gap between the will date and proving (nearly six years) may reflect his advanced age at will-writing and subsequent long life, or delay in probate.

His son Nathaniel Holt (b. 17 Jun 1736) is the next ancestor in the direct line. Nathaniel was likely a son by his first wife Sarah Judkins; the will's omission of Nathaniel may indicate he had already received his inheritance or had relocated.

Biography

Charles Holt was born in 1694 on Hog Island, Surry County, Virginia, the son of William Holt and Elizabeth Seward. He married first Sarah Judkins, daughter of Samuel Judkins III (whose will was proved 1740 in Surry County). After Sarah's death in 1756, he married Elizabeth Presson, daughter of Robert Presson.

Charles represents the fourth generation of the Holt family on Hog Island. His son Nathaniel Holt, born 1736, eventually moved to the Virginia frontier, beginning the family's migration that would take the Holts through Montgomery County, VA, to Hawkins County, TN, and ultimately to Kentucky and Kansas.
