Biography
Nathaniel Holt was born 17 June 1736 in Virginia, the son of Charles Holt and Sarah Judkins. He married Abigail Clanton (b. 1742), daughter of John Clanton (c.1720-1778) and Amy Wyche Clanton (1722-1804) of Surry County, Virginia.
Nathaniel's will was probated in Sussex County, Virginia (formed from Surry County in 1753-1754). Sussex County Will Books 1754-1796 at the Library of Virginia include records from this period. His son Drury Holt Sr., born 1759 in Surry County (Albemarle Parish), served in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
The Albemarle Parish Register (published by Boddie, 1958; also Richards ed. on Archive.org) records three of Nathaniel and Abigail's children: Mally (b. 26 Aug 1762), Betsy (b. 21 Nov 1767), and Amy Wyche (b. 21 Aug 1770). The naming of a daughter "Amy Wyche Holt" confirms the identity of Abigail's mother as Amy Wyche. The register also records the birth of a "Holt Clanton" (b. 5 May 1759) to parents Nathaniel and Mary Clanton, showing the Holt name used as a given name in the intermarried Clanton family.
Nathaniel represents the transitional generation between the established Hog Island planter family and the frontier-moving Holts who would push through Montgomery County, VA into Tennessee and Kentucky.
