Biography

Randall Holt Jr. was born around 1629 on Hogg Island, Surry County, Virginia, the son of Randolph Holt I and Mary Bayley. In 1650, he obtained a grant for 1,022 acres on Hog Island as "son and lawful heir" of his father, consolidating the family's landholdings on the island.

Holt served in the House of Burgesses in 1656, making him one of the earliest legislators in the family line. He received a major's commission in the British colonial forces and was appointed Justice for Surry County on 22 December 1668. He married Elizabeth Hansford (1626-before 1709).

After his death on 26 September 1679, his widow Elizabeth had the Hog Island property resurveyed at 1,450 acres. The Bailey-Holt plantation on Hog Island remained in the family for over two hundred years, making it one of the longest-held properties in colonial Virginia.
