Biography

Mary Bailey was the daughter and sole heir of John Bailey of Hog Island. She inherited his acreage on the eastern end of Jamestown Island sometime before February 20, 1620, and also inherited 490 to 500 acres on Hog Island. As an underage orphan, her guardians Robert Evers and Richard Bailey (with Bailey's surrogate Edward Grindon) generated income on her behalf by placing her real estate in the hands of tenants. Robert Evers at times personally occupied one of Mary's tracts on Jamestown Island. In September 1628, a tenant named Elmer Philips (Phillips) was living on her other parcel. In 1626, Sir George Yeardley commenced renting Mary's Hog Island property.

Around 1629, Mary married Randall Holt (Howlett) I. The household resided on her property at Hog Island. She died before August 1, 1643, at which time a patent for 710 acres was issued to her son Randall Holt Jr. as "sonn and Lawfull heire of Mary Bayley, sole daughter and heire of John Bayly of the said Island," with 490 acres "being expressly granted to the said Mary Bayly by the name of Mary Bayly, Orphan."
