Their Story

Paris to New France

Charles Edeline was born around 1644 in the parish of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, the son of David Edeline and Noelle Lambert. His father died before 1657, when Charles was perhaps thirteen; his mother died around 1665. He made his living as a shoemaker.

By 1669, Charles had migrated to New France and settled near Montreal. What brought him across the Atlantic is unrecorded, though the colony was actively recruiting tradesmen and laborers during this period.

Longueuil

Charles acquired land in Longueuil and established himself as a farmer in addition to his shoemaking trade. On 16 October 1675, he married Jeanne Braconnier, a Fille du Roi and widow of Crespin Thuillier dit LaTour. Jeanne was pregnant with her late husband's child at the time of the marriage.

Over the next eighteen years, Charles and Jeanne had ten children together. Their son Pierre, born 30 June 1683, was the first child baptized in Longueuil. Charles served as the church beadle (bedeau), a lay officer responsible for maintaining the church and assisting at services. He held this post until his death.

Death

Charles died in October 1711 at the hospital in Montreal, only months after Jeanne's death in February. He was approximately 67 years old. Six of their ten children had married; four others had died young or unmarried.
