Their Story
Maude Estrella Dickenson was born 14 April 1878 in Missouri. Her father Walter Hogan Dickinson died on 16 March 1888, when Maude was just nine years old. She had already lost her sister Anna on 16 January 1887. Whether her mother Anna LaFleur survived is unclear; Ancestry lists Anna's death as unknown.
Maude married John Giles II in 1897. John was born in 1867, the son of John Giles Sr. (1816-1876) and Sarah Spooner Giles (1831-1907), both from England. The family resided in St. Louis City by 1900, and by 1910 and 1920 were living in St. Louis Ward 24.
Maude and John had four children: Ivy (1898), Ira (1902), Iva M (1903, male), and Frances June (1908). Her son Ira became a sales representative for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
Her middle name "Estrella" (Spanish for "star") is distinctive and may reflect the influence of her maternal grandmother's French colonial heritage. Through her mother Anna LaFleur, Maude descends from the Tesson dit Honore family and ultimately from Jeanne Braconnier, a Fille du Roi who arrived in New France in 1673.
