Their Story
From Quebec to Wisconsin
John C. Corrigan was born on February 9, 1823, in Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec, Canada. His parents, William Corrigan (born 1800) and Margaret Brown (born 1804), were Irish immigrants who had settled in Quebec before eventually making their way to Wisconsin. John had at least two siblings: James (born 1834) and Josephine (born 1836, died 1837 in infancy).
The family eventually settled in or near Cedarburg, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, a town about 20 miles north of Milwaukee. The Corrigans were part of a broader Irish Catholic community in the region, and John C. would be buried at Saint Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery in Cedarburg, the same cemetery where his wife Ellen rests.
Family
John married Ellen Mooney (born 1831, also in Canada), connecting two Irish-Canadian families. Together they had at least six children. Their eldest, Maggie, died in 1872 at just 22 years old. Their daughter Bridget married John Mullaney in 1874 and became the matriarch known to later generations as "Nana."
A folded family tree document in family possession records William Corrigan and Margaret Browne as the parents, listing ten children including John C. The document also notes "Ellen, Wife of John C. Corrigan" among the family, confirming the marriage. Interestingly, another of William's children, Elizabeth, married a Mooney (with no children), suggesting intermarriage between the Corrigan and Mooney families.
Name Spelling
The family surname shifted from "Corrigan" (used by William and Margaret's generation, per the folded family tree) to "Carrigan" (used by the children's generation, per handwritten notes and the St. Mary's Institute certificate). Both spellings appear in primary family documents.
John died on January 29, 1899, at age 75, and was buried at Saint Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery in Cedarburg.
