Their Story

Beverly Roots

Thomas David Stokes was born on July 17, 1936, in Chicago, the eldest son of David Thomas Stokes and Dolores Barbara Schweihs. He grew up on Chicago's South Side in the Beverly neighborhood, a tight-knit Irish Catholic community. His paternal grandfather, Cornelius David Stokes, had immigrated from County Cork, Ireland and served as a Chicago firefighter. His maternal grandfather, Samuel P. Schweihs, was a German immigrant who died young in 1916 when Dolores was just two years old.

Career and Family

Thomas married Nancy Fitzgerald, also from the Beverly neighborhood. Nancy had attended Mercy High School and DePaul University. The couple settled in Western Springs, Illinois, a western suburb. They had four children: Thomas, Susan, Patricia, and Mary Carol.

Thomas rose to become CEO and Chairman of Interstate Electronics Company of Willowbrook, Illinois. He was also past President of C.S.C.A., Trustee of Communications Joint Apprenticeship Trust, Centennial President of LaGrange Country Club, and Board Member of First National Bank of LaGrange.

His daughter Susan married Ryan Mullaney, connecting the Stokes family to the Milwaukee Mullaney line.

Thomas died on June 3, 2003, at age 66. His funeral Mass was held at St. John of the Cross Church in Western Springs, with visitation at Hallowell and James Funeral Home in Countryside. He was interred at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
