Their Story
From County Cork to Chicago
Cornelius David Stokes was born on March 18, 1881, in County Cork, Ireland, to David Stokes and Catherine "Kate" Drew. He was one of at least seven children. At some point before 1910, Cornelius emigrated to Chicago, where he married Anna Magdalena Noonan in 1910. Anna was a Chicago native, the daughter of James J. Noonan and Margaret A. Hegarty.
Chicago Firefighter
Cornelius served with the Chicago Fire Department, eventually retiring from the force. He and Anna settled on Chicago's South Side, attending St. Barnabas Church in the Beverly neighborhood, a parish that would anchor the family for generations. They had five sons: David Thomas, James Joseph, Marguerite Veronica, Cornelius Joseph, and Leo Thomas.
Anna died on August 21, 1955, at age 66. Cornelius survived her by less than two years, dying in March 1957 at approximately 76. Both are buried together at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Illinois, in Section JK, Lot 513.
