Biography

John Anderson Sr. was born around 1734, the son of immigrant minister Rev. James Anderson and Suit Garland. His birthplace is given as Pennsylvania in the DAR application, though Lale (1976) describes him as "a native of Skye," possibly conflating him with his Scottish-born father. He married Sarah Crossey (or Carney) on 28 November 1752.

The family settled on the Pacolet River in the Ninety Six District, South Carolina. John served as a Minute Man in Col. Roebuck's Regiment during the Revolutionary War. He participated in the Cherokee War and died of wounds sustained at the siege of Augusta on 18 October 1781 (one source says at the Hospital at Camden on 8 October 1781). Two of his sons, Scarlett and Joshua, were also killed in service in 1783.

His widow Sarah petitioned South Carolina on 26 November 1807 for reinstatement of her veteran's pension, declaring she had "lost in the last Revolutionary War her husband, John Anderson, and two Sons who were true friends to their country." She died in 1808 in Kentucky.
